Closets: Closet Organizer Mania

by Janice on November 3, 2008

Did you know that by eliminating the clutter in your closets, we can make our surroundings less stressful, which in turn brings in a sense of order, calmness and peace?  That’s why more and more closets are going through a “Closet Organizer Mania”!  It takes good planning to keep our closets organized and good storage and spacesavers is the key.  Need help?  Well, I’ve got the closet organization tips you need…so let’s get started, shall we?

First, and foremost, don’t start your closet organizing until you are serious about spending at least 2-3 hours that day.  You must be serious about your mission.  Believe me… you will be totally satisfied when the job is done.

With that said, and you are ready to start, Get 4 large boxes and label each one:  1.  KEEP  2.  DONATE OR GIVE AWAY  3.  REPAIR  4.  TRASH

As you sift through your clothing/items in your closet, you will toss them into the appropriate boxes.  Questions to ask yourself are these:  When did I last use/wear this?  Will I need or use this again in the very near future?  Does it fit right now?  Can I mend or repair this item?

Rule of thumb:  If you haven’t worn or used this item in the last 6 months, chances are you won’t.  Take it to your local charity store or consignment shop.

Once more space has been acquired, start by organizing your clothing by color.  (Keep red’s together, blue’s together and so forth.)  Hang neatly on hangers of the same size, color and type.  No wire hangers please.  (You can recycle your wire hangers by taking them to your local dry cleaning establishment.)

Now, this is where spacesavers come in handy.  Spacesavers such as boxes, bins, racks, crates and shelving units will help you get neatly organized, eliminate the clutter and save space.  These closet organizers are the perfect solution for storing almost anything in your closet.  (Eco-friendly and green tips are coming up…stay tuned.)

You can store your sweaters and shoes in clear, see-thru plastic containers.  Boxes with clear fronts will give your closet a streamlined look while still allowing the contents to be viewed.  Don’t forget to label your containers.  Nothing goes back in the wrong place when labeled properly.  And never stack more than two containers high.  This way you have your one hand for grabbing the box you need, while the other hand is holding the box you don’t.

Hanging shoe racks are a smart solution and will free up floor space giving your closet a neat , clean feel.  Make sure to keep your shelving racks accessible and not to place them too high.  Also keep bins out of open areas to prevent accidental trips and falls.

Store items used/worn by use of frequency… most often used items should be placed on the lower racks within reach, at eye level … the rest placed on the top racks… like seasonal clothing.

Because plastic containers are not particularly good for our environment, the best way to go GREEN in the closet is to reuse/recycle containers you may already have like shoeboxes, baskets, or wine crates.  These items won’t emit as many volatile organic compounds (VOCs) as synthetic fabrics or plastics do.

You can also find canvas baskets which are made of natural fibers, to use for laundry and garbage baskets.  Look for natural fabrics, such as 100 percent organic cotton, that haven’t been treated with caustic dyes or bleach.  Check out the one’s we suggest here.

Want more GREEN in your closet?  Then use environment-friendly materials such as formaldehyde-free bamboo flooring for low emissions, low-voltage lighting to save energy, low-VOC paint to reduce air pollution and beech cabinets produced in Germany, which has strict standards for sustainably managed forests.

Find everything you need to organize you life

Now top off the space by adding a favorite picture, vase, silk plant, scented candle and a unique lighting fixture, and it’s not just a place for storing, but a beautiful closet you can be proud of.  A space you want to stay in, rather than grabbing your clothes and running to another room.

Method and order can be finally achieved and chaotic clutter cast aside with the right closet organizers and spacesavers.  Free up your mind and spirit and bring a sense of peace into your space.  As the saying goes, “A place for everything, and everything in its place”.
